Snoring Cures – Effective Ways to Stop Snoring

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Resent studies have shown that there are several effective snoring cures that work.

If you have what would be described as severe snoring, it is advisable to first seek the help of your doctor to make sure your snoring is not a sign of a more serious problem such as sleep apnea.  Having a snoring problem does not always mean you have sleep apnea, it may just be plain old snoring, and if that is the case then the snoring cures below may just be the answer you have been looking for.

For normal snoring, a doctor will probably recommend a more conservative treatment first, such as diet and exercise, devices to assist or, as a final resort surgery. A Mayo Clinic Health Letter covers these treatment approaches:

Avoid excessive alcohol use: Too much alcohol consumption can cause muscle relaxation in the airway. Avoiding alcohol before bedtime may help.

Lose weight: Extra weight tends to narrow airway, contributing to snoring.

Stop smoking: Smoking has been linked to an increased risk of snoring. People who stop smoking have a lower risk of snoring.

Relieve nasal obstruction: Adhesive nasal strips (Breathe Right, others) or nasal sprays can help to reduce nasal obstruction, and allow for freedom airflow. that can help to stop snoring.

Change in sleep position: If you sleep on your back, the tongue can tend to sag and narrow the airway while sleeping. A doctor can suggest techniques such as a snore prevention pillow, or to try to sleep in other positions.

Try assistive devices: Doctors have found that the most effective treatment for snoring is a sleep apnea machine or CPAP. It delivers positive air pressure that keeps the upper airway open during sleep.

Surgical options: As a last resort doctors may recommend a surgical procedure that can help reduce snoring, either by cutting away excess throat tissue or by stiffening tissues of the soft palate by the use of scar tissue to prevent vibration and sagging of the airway.

It is worth trying these snoring cures.  A combination of the above snoring solutions may be the answer you are looking for to get relieve from snoring.

Advances in Sleep Apnea Machine – Not your Dad’s CPAP

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

It is worthwhile considering looking into a new apnea machine if you have tried one in the past and not been able to use it comfortably. There have been several significant advancements in the area of sleep apnea machine development.  Many of the complaints people have had in the past with using a apnea cpap, have been resolved with new technology.

Lets take a look at some of these and see if they may be the answer you have been looking for.

Auto CPAP

Many people have described using a CPAP machine like trying to breath while sticking your head out the window of a speeding car.  The air just keeps pushing back as you try and breath.  If this describes your experience, then you should look into a new apnea machine.  One of the biggest advances in CPAP technologies, is the auto cpap.  This technology tracks a patient’s breathing. and adjusts for the changes one has during different stages of sleep.  This makes breathing with a CPAP much easier, then in the past.

There are several other variations of names for this feature depending on the make of the machine such as as A-Flex, Bi-Flex, and C-Flex among others. Almost all of these try to decrease the necessary pressure when the patient exhales compared to the level provided when inhaling.

Nasal Mask

Another hurdle that has hindered people from using there sleep apnea machine, is there full mouth/nose masks.  This style of mask can feel very restricting.  I remember when I took my sleep study test and they put one of those masks on my all I could think was. “oh no, I don’t want to use on of these things for the rest of your life!”  Well you can be assured that the newer nasal masks that fit lightly on your nose are so comfortable compared with the older style masks.  It is worth taking a look at a newer mask.

You should also be aware that, it is advisable to change your mask after 6 months of use.  This may seem unnecessary, but the air seal tends to wear out after use, and causes the mask to leak.

In light of all these advances in technology.  It is worth taking a look at a new sleep apnea machine.  It may be you can find the relief you have been looking for.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

If you suffer from severe snoring, then you came here looking for snoring solutions
that work.  There are several different options available to
you; some are work well while others not so much.  We will be focusing
on the different options for snoring and apnea surgery, to help
you decide if surgery is the best option for you.

Because
snoring can also be an indication of a more serious problem known as
sleep apnea. lets look at the signs of sleep apnea before we look into
the different types of snoring and apnea surgery available to you.  You
can not properly find a snoring solution if you don’t know the cause of
that snoring. Snoring does not indicate that you have sleep apnea, but
if you are having several of the other symptoms listed below, then you
should consider seeking the advice of a doctor.  Several studies have
linked sleep apnea to health issues such as heart problems and high
blood pressure.

Symptoms of sleep apnea:

High blood pressure

Constant drowsiness during the day

Headaches when you wake in the morning

Irritability

Severe snoring

Mouth dryness after sleeping

Not able to sleep through the night

There are several surgical options that are available for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea:

Radiofrequency
ablation is a relatively new procedure for the treatment for sleep
apnea and snoring. This treatment places radio frequency and heat on
the tissue at the back
of the throat, causing scarring tissue. This will stiffening
of the treated area. The operation is quick  and is
performed on an outpatient basis. This is often effective in
reducing the snoring and sleep apnea, but, may not completely
eliminate it.

Secondly is an apnea surgery called
uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.  In this method the doctor will try to open
the airway by removing the soft tissue in the back of the
throat, including the uvula and pharynx. This surgery is known to be
very
invasive, and there are several risks and side effects such as scar
tissue.

Another option is the
Pillar Procedure that is a treatment for obstructive sleep
apnea and snoring. In the operation, three small strips are
inserted into the soft palate. After this short procedure, the soft palate is
more rigid and snoring and apnea are reduced.

Please
remember that surgery no matter how routine, can always have unforeseen
problems and is something that should not be taken lightly. Apnea
surgery
should only be considered as a last resort for snoring
solutions
, and under the guidance and advice of a doctor.
